Bürg

Late Gothic Gemmingen Castle

Schloss von Bürg

On the steep slopes overlooking the Kocher Valley stands the Late Gothic Gemmingen Castle (1545). This charming landmark, with its beautiful stepped gables, also gave the town its name.

After a chequered period of common ownership, the castle came into the possession of the von Gemingen family in the mid-15th century, and since then has not changed hands.

Baron von Gemmingen ruled over the municipality until 1806, when it came under the control of the Kingdom of Württemberg.

Kirche von Bürg

Until the Reformation (1541), the village of Bürg was a branch of Kochertürn, and subsequently Neuenstadt. However, some time around 1650 the village received its own chapel, an octagonal early Baroque structure housing the tombs of the Gemmingen patron's family.

Bürg even had its own pastor for a short period of time in the 18th and 19th centuries. The old parsonage, schoolhouse and town hall (today it is a community centre) still recall the local history.

Bürg was spared from destruction at the end of the war, attracting an above-average number of displaced persons and refugees. As a result, Bürg thereafter underwent a rapid transformation from being an agricultural village to a residential community.
